City of spa
City of spa
Originally, spa had nothing to do with massage. Or even with herbs, mud wraps, much less with beauty products like whitening peel-off mask or other skin-cleansing agents.
Unlike traditional massage and foot reflexology, which have been around for centuries, the spa is a new phenomenon in Thailand.
Some hotels may have had spas for a decade or two now, but they were few and far between then. And they were limited mostly to hotels belonging to international chains. These hotels then had full-fledged spa services abroad, particularly in Bali. With Thailand emerging as a major tourist destination in Asia in the 80s, hotel spas became a matter of course.
Just a decade ago, only a handful of people knew exactly what a "spa" was, and even fewer had enjoyed first-hand experience. Today, spas have become the talk of the global village. Thousands of places have been springing up all over the world offering "spa" facilities in response to the demand.
Thailand has been on the cutting edge of this trend. With its tradition of natural healing arts such as ancient Thai massage, natural springs, an abundance of medicinal flora and a deserved reputation for excellent service, Thailand was ready to accommodate the demand and literally hundreds of spas have sprung up over the past few years.
Originally, spa had nothing to do with massage. Or even with herbs, mud wraps, much less with beauty products like whitening peel-off mask or other skin-cleansing agents. The word, in fact, was a simple abbreviation for Sanum Per Aqua, Greek for “health through water.”
In the past, spa involved nothing more than water. Only during the past several decades has it come to mean a center for healing and nourishing the mind, body and spirit. More lately, it has even come to mean a place for fitness, stress management, peace of mind, pampering and pleasure, and health and wellness.
It has become a place to go for many other things. A business traveler goes into it to minimise jet lag. A mother of three relishes a spa session primarily to have time for herself. A group of friends sometimes go for it as part of birthday celebration. A man with back pain goes there to seek relief, so is a teenager troubled with acne or a weekend warrior sore from overexertion. In some cases, even a man deciding to quit smoking enters a spa. So does a busy executive want to rediscover his spirituality.
In Bangkok, there’s a proliferation of spas offering a wide variety of techniques and services, including Swedish, Japanese Shiatsu, and Thai massage, European facials, acupuncture, Dead Sea salt scrubs, Moor mud wraps, thalassotherapy, aromatherapy, reflexology, microdermabrasion, endermologie, reiki, aura imaging, watsu, rasul, hypnotherapy, classes in nutrition, meditation, journaling, yoga and Tai Chi. And believe it or not, you can even find here a place that styles itself as nail spa.
Truly, visiting some of these unique spas can be part of your exploration of this mystical city.

Wat Po
Wat Po
Wat Po, Bangkok's largest and oldest temple, offers various interesting things to discover: inscriptions, murals, images, and sculptures, not to mention the traditional massage and herbal medicine centers.
A Buddhist temple is supposed to be a place for quiet contemplation; a place where devotees can seek refuge from the hectic outside world and learn the profound teachings of the Lord Buddha amid a serene environment.
But this is not exactly the case with Wat Po. Located within a short walk from the Grand Palace, this much-visited temple is one of the busiest in the capital. Day in and day out tourists crowd the place, some in a form of a pilgrimage while most visitors gape at the marvelous structures on the temple premises.
Wat Po is over 200 years old, but most of the buildings still existing today were built about 150 years ago. The foremost attraction is the enormous Reclining Buddha, a 49-meter long gilded image protected inside a spacious viharn. This building is lavishly adorned with centuries-old murals.
Nearby, in one corner are souvenir stalls offering postcards, jewelry and Thai handicrafts. Here, you will also encounter interesting vendors like the one with large boas crawling over their shoulders. They are not trying to sell you their cumbersome pets though. Rather, they want you to pose with these constrictors on your shoulders instead!
The temple's main chapel, which lies within a double cloistered courtyard, is worth a see. It is covered on the inside with traditional Thai murals of great craftsmanship. Beneath the inner and outer cloisters of this courtyard are row upon row of Buddha images which look rather new because of restoration works.
Wat Po is also famous for its traditional Thai massage center and school. This school offers traditional therapeutic massage to all visitors at reasonable prices. Thai massage is said a very effective way to relieve muscle pain as well as certain muscular diseases and is most sought after by tourists. The special therapy using hot infusions of medicinal herbs is supposed to be the best.
While always considered second only to The Grand Palace as the most visited temple in Bangkok, Wat Po is worth a lengthy exploration in itself. Drop by for a discovery tour any day.

Air conditioner
Room Air Conditioner
Updated by James Robertson March 2010
What to Look For
What to Look For
If your current air conditioner is more than eight years old, it's time for a new one. Over the life of the product, the amount you'll save in energy bills will more than likely exceed the cost of the new unit.
The following are basic criteria to use when choosing a new system:
*BTUs: The cooling capacity of an air conditioner is measured in British thermal units per hour (Btu/hr). To find the best BTUs needed to cool your room, multiply the square footage of the space by 10 and then add 4,000.
*Energy Star rating: The Environmental Protection Agency's "Energy Star" ratings indicate that an appliance is at least 10 percent more energy-efficient than the minimum federal standards.
*EER: A room air conditioner's EER, or Energy-Efficiency Ratio, is the ratio of the cooling output divided by the unit's power consumption. The higher the EER, the more efficient the model.
*Anti-Microbial filter? Most room air conditioners come with reusable electrostatic filters, which may be treated with triclosan. If purchasing a unit with an antimicrobial filter, ask the retailer to replace it with an untreated electrostatic filter.
Check if your state energy office or local utility offer rebates and trade-ins of older models to encourage the purchase of energy-efficient units. You could end up saving $75 or more on your purchase.
If you live in a very humid climate, look for models that are good at removing moisture; ask about the rate of water removal (in pints per hour).
At the store, compare the energy consumption and usage costs of one model to another using the yellow "EnergyGuide" label on the product.
Energy Use
Environmental Impacts
Energy Use
The electricity generated to power air conditioning carries both global and personal health consequences. In burning fossil fuels such as coal to supply electricity to homes and workplaces, power plants discharge clouds of soot and other pollutants into the atmosphere. Among these are mercury and carbon dioxide (CO2). Air conditioner use in the U.S. results in an average of about 100 million tons of CO2 emissions from power plants every year.
HCFCs
Formerly used as cooling agents, ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been replaced by hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which deplete 95 percent less ozone. However, booming demand for air conditioners in hot climates such as India and China has upped the chemical's output in developing countries 20 to 35 percent each year, causing damage at an alarming rate and possibly setting back ozone recovery by 25 years. In industrial countries, HCFCs are being replaced with ozone-safe cooling agents and will be banned in the U.S. by 2010. But HCFCs will be allowed in developing countries through 2040, and because they're still cheaper to use than ozone-safe chemicals, production in developing countries is expected to increase fivefold by 2010.
Disposal
Federal law requires that HCFCs be recovered from air conditioners and other appliances before they are dismantled for recycling or tossed in landfills, and the EPA is authorized to impose fines of up to $25,000 for failure to comply with regulations. Before discarding your old unit, search for a company that is EPA-certified to recover HCFCs. Share the Air has certified companies listed by region.
Personal Health
In the midst of sweltering heat waves, air conditioning can be a lifesaver, protecting against heat stroke and hyperthermia. But, without proper maintenance, air conditioners can also be a health hazard. Dirty filters can allow allergens, pesticides and other particulate matter to enter your home from the outside, posing threats to indoor air quality. Exposure to those pollutants can trigger a host of health problems, including allergies and asthma and eye, nose and throat irritation.

Usage Tips
*Turn it down. If your unit has a thermostat, set it to 78 degrees F.
*Fan only.At night, use your air conditioner's fan-only mode.
*Use the recirculate option instead of constantly cooling hot air from outdoors.
*Turn the air conditioner off when you're out.
*Clean the filter often, (biweekly or as needed), and where possible, hose down the back of the unit to remove debris that can clog cooling coils.
*Seal leaks. Make sure window models are installed as tightly as possible to prevent hot air from seeping in around the unit's edges.
